The second week of the New Year usually sees plenty of snow and frigid temperatures.

In 1911, people in Rapid City, S.D., were chilled by a dramatic drop in temperature. In just two hours the mercury went from 55 to -13. That's a difference of almost 70 degrees!

The following year, Iowa had a new record for the coldest temperature ever. That's when it dropped to 47 degrees below zero in Washita. That record would later be tied in the February of 1996.

Massachusetts made history in 1981.

That's when the temperature fell to –35, the coldest temperature ever in the town of Chester.

One-year later, winter came to Florida in a big way.

An arctic air mass pushed the temperature in Homestead, Fla., down to 29.

The “happiest place on earth” chilled at 23 degrees.

The cold did major damage to citrus and vegetable crops as well.
