If you're stranded in middle of nowhere as the temperatures plunge, survival takes smarts and preparation.Getting out of the elements and staying warm is key. Even a downed tree can provide some shelter.According to the Center For Disease Control, more than 600 Americans die each year from exposure to extreme cold.So if you're planning a winter trip, driving through remote areas or skiing in the back country, be prepared.
