Miami, FL (News Channel) -- Hurricane season officially begins June 1, and one storm has already formed in the Pacific. Officials say the Atlantic Basin could also start spawning storms soon, but they say people are not ready and they worry that could prove deadly.Along the nation's coastlines it's hard to tell it will soon be more than just beach season.Wayne Sallade, Director of Charlotte County, Florida Emergency Management said, "We're calling it hurricane amnesia." It’s not a medical condition, but one officials say could leave thousands injured or worse.Craig Fugate with Florida Emergency Management said, "In the hours after a storm, a major hurricane, you're on your own." According to a new poll people aren't ready for that. The Mason Dixon survey found two-thirds of coastal residents have no hurricane supply kit. More than half don’t have a disaster plan and one in eight doesn't plan to evacuate. The numbers are alarming to those charged with public safety. National Hurricane Center Director Bill Reed said, "We can't tell you when, we can't tell exactly where but some time during the season we're gonna face another threat from a hurricane."It's a message that seems to be getting lost in the wind even in places where storms almost wiped out everything.Punta Gorda, Florida suffered widespread damage during Hurricane Charley; four years later, it's hard to tell what happened. Officials say that's the problem, it makes it too easy to think it can't happen again. "Your not reminded everyday of what may have caused certain things to occur here," said Sallade.Officials are trying to remind residents that now is the time to make a very simple choice. "You either plan to be a survivor now or you risk not surviving the storm,” Sallade said. With hurricane season starting Sunday they hope this time the message gets through.
