Hawaii very rarely sees tropical systems.

In fact, the island chain hasn't been directly affected by a hurricane since 1992.

Hurricane Iniki hit the island of Kauai in September of that year.

The eye of the category 4 hurricane passed directly over the island packing winds of 140 mph, making it the strongest hurricane to ever hit the Hawaiian Islands.

The combination of a 6-foot storm surge and 18-foot waves devastated the community.

75% of homes were destroyed, six people died and more than 100 sustained serious injuries.

Damages totaled nearly 2 billion dollars, becoming the costliest storm ever in the Central Pacific.
